The government’s first progress report of its 25 Year Environment Plan indicate that, in the first 12 months, 90% of the Plan’s aims have been delivered or progressed
On 16 May, the UK Government published its first progress review of the 25 Year Environment Plan.
Launched in January 2018, the Plan outlines how the government aims to achieve several environmental outcomines, among them restoring and safeguarding wildlife habitats, improving air and water quality, and curbing plastic waste.
Notably, the Plan aligns with several LI policy positions, and reflects many of the LI’s recommendations to Defra made during the consultation phase.
The first progress report on the delivery of the 25 Year Environment Plan is a good summary of the government’s environmental achievements in the last year. Most notably, the government has:
- progressed a new Agriculture Bill through Parliament
- committed to plans for the first Environment Bill in 20 years
- funded the creation of a new Northern Forest and appointed a new Tree Champion
- launched a National Parks Review to strengthen protections for England’s National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty
